DOGS ON THE SOFA, YES OR NO?

I have no objections to dogs being on the sofa whatsoever, if they behave and wait to be invited. I tend to encourage this more once a dog has learned to settle in their crate. Sofas are a great place to sit and snuggle with the dog as you are chilling out. The only dogs that I don’t let on the sofa are dogs who think it’s a play gym, and dogs who guard the sofa or people until training has been completed (see resource guarding on this page). If a dog jumps on the sofa without permission I get them straight off. I want them to wait calmly for me to invite them before they get on. I also don’t fuss over the dog or give them any attention when I first invite them up until they are lying down and we are comfy, so the dog learns that getting up and settled is what gets them the attention. Be strict with this, especially if you have behavior problems and/or a multi-dog household. Any messing around on the sofa, it’s off the sofa you go. Rinse and repeat until the dog gets the memo.
